What’s in a Name?

August 15th, 2010 by James Adcock

Is Chelsea a keeper or a changer? Asks Hertfordshire Wedding Photographer James Adcock

That’s what researchers call the newly married once they figure out what to do – if anything – about their names. Now that the big Clinton-Mezvinsky wedding is a wrap and Rhinebeck, N.Y., is back to its idyllic self, the question remains what Chelsea’s choice will be.

There are loads of options, from making up brand new names and hybrids (Clivinsky) to hyphenates and add-ons like Mom (Hillary Rodham Clinton).

Research indicates that 77 to 95 percent of women legally change their names when they marry, including those who make a switch but incorporate their maiden names informally to preserve their identities on the job.

Jo-Anne Stayner, who provides name-change assistance at ImaMrs.com, said the decision today for many first-time brides is all about the value of a woman’s digital footprint, along with her educational and professional oomph. We’re not all Clintons, but we still care about the name game.

“With most women establishing a career before marriage (the average new bride is about 27 years old), it makes sense to want to protect the personal brand they have worked 14-hour days to create,” Stayner said.

The question-and-answer site Ask.com fields more than a million queries every day on a variety of subjects. In the past 30 days, three of its top-25 questions covered marital alphabet soup.

How long before a wedding do you start planning for a name change?

Once you’re engaged, Ask’s experts recommend. Legal steps usually must wait until after the ceremony because a marriage certificate is required as proof of a name change. Gathering forms and researching requirements can take time, so getting a prenuptial jump on the chore will help. Government agencies, banks, credit-card companies and employers have their own procedures.

Whose last name goes first in hyphenation?

The decision usually is based on sound, alphabetical order or personal preference.

What percentage of brides takes their husband’s name?

Although recent research indicates a range spanning well more than half, Ask cited one study done at Indiana University last year estimating 80 percent. A recent study out of the Netherlands indicates women who use their husbands’ surnames earn an average of $1,150 less a month than those who keep their maiden names. Name-changers generally were older and had less education.

Presidential daughters over the past four decades have either kept their names or moved them to the middle.

Chelsea, at 30, with an advanced college degree and some work experience to her credit (as an investment analyst), is a pretty average bride, other than her dad being a former president, her mom the secretary of state and her pricey nuptials dubbed the latest wedding of the century. She’s off on a top-secret honeymoon with no name announcement yet.

But consider Samantha Saephan, 29, of the San Francisco Bay Area. She’s a public-relations manager for a large communications firm and will soon dive in to a name change after getting hitched to Sean Thai on May 22. Of ethnic lu-Mien origin, her parents are from Laos and named her Meuang Ay Saephan. She chose Samantha for her public self in middle school but remained Meuang Ay legally and at home.

“I already knew that I wanted to change my last name so I would have my husband’s last name,” she said. “It’s a little bit of being old fashioned and traditional, and also further down the line when we do have children I’d like to have the same last name as my kids.”

On the table are Samantha Meuang Ay Thai and Meuang Ay Thai.

Business law professor David Ryan Polgar, 31, in West Hartford, Conn., married Leslie Doane the same day Saephan and Thai wed. Doane legally took her hubby’s last name, informally preserving Doane as a second middle name for her work as a real-estate agent.

“I want to come up in (Internet) searches if people look me up under Doane, but the whole process is frustrating,” she said.

Lauren Rotchford, 34, in Atlanta, needs more time to make the leap after marrying Randy Holmes on May 8. She wants to change her name, but she’s having trouble letting go.

“I think it’s important. We’re married. He’s my husband and I want to show that I’m committed to him,” she said. “It’s just that I feel like I waited awhile to get married and I have experience in my career and I’m known as Lauren Rotchford. It’s a little bit harder than I thought it would be.”

Until recently, Mary Dean Taylor’s feminist side was battling her madly-in-love side over taking on Birkel as she counts down to her wedding in Kansas City, Mo. “He’d really like for me to take his last name, though he hasn’t been insistent or vocal about it,” said Taylor, 31.

She had a recent revelation to do the extra-middle-name thing informally and legally take on the hub’s surname. That’s four names. “My boss is already practicing,” Taylor said.

In San Antonio, Alisa LeSueur is on the other end of the spectrum. She was 46 when she married for the first time two years ago. It was husband Rob Salter’s second time around.

“There was never a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t change my last name when I married,” she said. “It doesn’t make sense to me that I should lose my entire identity just because I have chosen one person to share the rest of my life with.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding plans: Royal Couple Dished by butler, OK Magazine

August 13th, 2010 by James Adcock

August 12, 2010 — Prince William and Kate Middleton wedding plans were the talk of the Butler in today’s newest edition of OK! Magazine. Despite the fact the magazine is published on the wrong side of the pond, there is no doubt that those interested if, and when the wedding will happen will be reading the magazine.

Princess’ Diana’s Former butler, Paul Burrell, seemed to be low on chunk change so he gave the magazine all the dirt on what the couple could or should do. While most would see this interview as interesting, Burrell seems to be quoting a lot of historical weddings of the past to give some of his dirt.

According to the magazine: “William’s wedding is so important that it has to be attended by kings and queens and heads of state, so it has to be at a place that is big enough,” reasons Paul, who thinks London’s historic Westminster Abbey is the ideal venue.”

Unfortunately, most of the ‘details’ of this couple and their possible wedding is hypothetical and no ‘official’ announcement of date, venue, place or wedding, for that matter, has been announced.

Clinton wedding was picture perfect

Chelsea Clinton, the only child of former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, married her longtime boyfriend Saturday and in the end the super-secret wedding in Rhinebeck, N.Y., went off without a hitch.

“Quite honestly, a couple of things went really right, which made the experience even better,’’ said Bryan Rafanelli, the Boston-based event planner picked by the Clintons to orchestrate the day.

One, he said, was the weather, which was spectacular all weekend. And another were the folks in Rhinebeck, who’d been kept in the dark about the Clinton wedding. Rafanelli admitted yesterday he wasn’t certain how the hubbub might be received.

“But everyone was really great, including the neighbors,’’ he told us.

It probably helped that Rafanelli went door to door before the wedding delivering bottles of wine to the neighbors, handing out 17 in all. He chose a crisp, light white produced by the nearby Clinton Vineyards. (Established in 1977, the vineyard is unrelated to the bride or her family.)

“I do that whether I’m in Marblehead or Chatham,’’ Rafanelli told us. “That’s what we do. We want to be gracious to our clients’ neighbors as well.’’

Chelsea wore Vera Wang while her beau, Marc Mezvinsky, was decked out in a tux designed by Burberry’s Christopher Bailey. The couple was married at sunset at Astor Courts estate, a sumptuous spread in Rhinebeck. Hundreds of guests, among them Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, D.C. influence peddler Vernon Jordan, and former secretary of state Madeleine Albright, were seated in rows of chairs on a lush green lawn overlooking the Hudson River.

Rafanelli, who logged 53 room nights in Rhinebeck before the big day, and several more in New York City, said he was initially anxious about handling the wedding of a former first daughter. (Rafanelli, whose partner Mark Walsh once worked for Hillary Clinton, has done several fund-raisers and parties for the family in the past.)

He said the bride and groom, along with Chelsea’s mom and dad and grandmother, were “totally running the ship’’ during the planning process, which began in December.

“They articulated to me what they wanted — they wanted it outside, they wanted a tented wedding — and we went from there,’’ said Rafanelli, who arranged everything from the flowers (Boston’s Winston Flowers) and photographers (Boston’s Gigi de Manio was one of two) to the food, tent (Peterson Party Center of Winchester), linens (Boston’s Be Our Guest), music, valet company, and security.

The wedding had been the subject of media interest for weeks. Security was extremely tight and a no-fly zone was imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration for several hours Saturday. Rafanelli said he and his vendors were bound by strict confidentiality.

“I didn’t do anything with this family that I don’t do with all the other families I work with,’’ he said. “At the end of the day, people want their guests to experience how beautiful the flowers are, how great the music is, for the first time.’’

In addition to the covert Clinton affair, Rafanelli has put together three other high-profile weddings this summer: He handled the opulent Marblehead wedding of Elizabeth Lynch, daughter of longtime Fidelity executive Peter Lynch; the wedding of New York congressman Anthony Weiner and Hillary Clinton’s longtime aide, Huma Abedin; and the Cape Cod nuptials of Boston attorney Jennifer Berylson, whose grandparents founded the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation, a Chestnut Hill-based charity that doles out $10 million in grants annually.

What’s next?

“I have another event Saturday, and then I’m going down to the Cape for a while,’’ Rafanelli said. “I haven’t been all summer, which is because this has been the most exciting summer of my life.’’

Sussex vicar guilty of immigration marriage scam

August 1st, 2010 by James Adcock
Brown carrying out a marriage ceremony The Reverend Alex Brown denied knowing the marriages were false

A vicar has been found guilty of carrying out hundreds of fake marriages to bypass immigration law.

Of the 383 weddings Reverend Alex Brown conducted over four years at the Church of St Peter and St Paul in St Leonards, Sussex, 360 of them were shams.

Crown Prosecution Service said it was thought to be the largest sham marriage case it had brought to court.

The jury at Lewes Crown Court convicted the 61-year-old of conspiring to facilitate illegal immigration.

Two co-defendants have also been found guilty of the same offence.

One co-defendant, Vladymyr Buchak, 33, paid eastern Europeans up to £3,000 each to marry Africans, mainly from Nigeria.

And another – solicitor and pastor Michael Adelasoye, 50, of St Matthews Drive, St Leonards – used his knowledge of the law to help illegal immigrants with applications to the Home Office.

The court heard Adelasoye knew many of the participants through his role as pastor of the Ark of Hope evangelical church in Hastings.

But when giving evidence, Adelasoye told jurors: “I have a lot of respect of the sanctity of marriage.”

During the trial, jurors heard Brown did not follow Church of England procedures for reading out marriage banns for a substantial part of the indictment period.

The jury was told Brown, of Blomfield Road, St Leonards, had pleaded guilty to a charge of solemnising a marriage without the banns being duly published.

The court heard Brown conducted the 360 sham ceremonies between July 2005 and July 2009.

The defendants were caught after the UK Border Agency investigated the bogus marriages.

Michael Adelasoye Michael Adelasoye knew many of the Africans through his own evangelical church in Hastings

Brown was arrested last June and both his vicarage home and church were searched. He was suspended from duty.

Investigators found documents he had doctored, including the church’s electoral roll and a second copy which hid a dramatic increase in weddings at the church.

The court heard how Buchak, of Anglesea Terrace, St Leonards, a Ukrainian national who had lived illegally in the UK since at least 2004, had been responsible for “cajoling and persuading” people into marriages of convenience.

He preyed on migrant workers who were living in the area and desperate to earn money.

Jurors were shown photocopies of the marriage register which showed hundreds of people who had got married all seemed to live in a small number of streets, with 90 couples registered as living in one road and 52 in another.

In some instances, several brides and grooms claimed to live in the same house. The court heard most of those involved in the marriages had given false addresses.

Giving evidence, Brown insisted he only ever married couples he was sure were together for the right reasons and said he only made exceptions if the bride-to-be was about to give birth.

Archdeacon of Hastings and Lewes, the Venerable Philip Jones, said it was a very unusual case

He admitted he occasionally forgot to check passports of foreign nationals and said he became suspicious of one or two couples, but only because of the vast differences in age between bride and groom.

Sentencing was adjourned until 6 September for pre-sentence reports to be carried out on Brown and Adelasoye.

Judge Richard Hayward remanded Buchak in custody and gave Brown and Adelasoye continued bail, but added: “You have been convicted on very clear evidence of a very serious offence and the court will be considering all sentencing options.”

Outside court, Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings Philip Jones, said: “We are particularly sorry for those who have been deceived and hurt by the actions of Father Alex Brown.

“The church and the community of St Leonards-on-Sea are faced with a betrayal of trust.”

Brown, Buchak and Adelasoye Brown, Buchak and Adelasoye are due to be sentenced next month

He added: “The Diocese of Chichester sets high standards and expects its clergy not only to comply with the law but also to honour the trust placed in them at their ordination and the promises made on becoming a vicar.”

He said the diocese was “saddened” and conscious of the effect on the church. He added that people who had been properly married there had felt concerned about what had happened.

Brown could now face disciplinary action, he added.

After the hearing, Det Insp Andy Cummins, from the UK Border Agency, said it was an unprecedented investigation, involving a church minister who was prepared to abuse his position – and the trust placed in him by the church and his community.

He said: “The members of this conspiracy were happy to exploit and take advantage of other people’s desperation for their own ends.”

Ken Goss, from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said the case was unusual because Brown was prosecuted under the Marriage Act 1949, for deliberately failing to follow correct procedures.

“This painstaking investigation and successful prosecution has halted a deliberate and systematic abuse of the immigration laws of this country,” he added.

Immigration minister Damian Green said the convictions sent a clear message that Britain was “no longer a soft touch”.

He said specialist teams of immigration and police officers were working to tackle this form of organised criminality.

“We are determined to create a hostile environment which makes it harder than ever for illegal immigrants to come to the UK and put untold pressures on our public services,” he added.

Watertight security as Chelsea Clinton marries in America’s ‘royal wedding’

August 1st, 2010 by James Adcock

CHELSEA CLINTON was getting married last night – after throwing a huge security blanket around the top-secret ceremony.

Former president’s Bill daughter shelled out $200,000 – £130,000- to ensure no information about her wedding to long-term boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky leaked out.

Guests – rumoured to include celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Barbra Streisand – were only told of the wedding venue a week ago.

Chelsea, 30, swore her staff to secrecy and even delivered bottles of wine to residents of tiny village of Rhinebeck, 100 miles north of New York City, to thank them.

Roads surrounding the estate were closed for 12 hours while a no-fly zone was in place overhead the area in a bid to keep the big day as private as possible.

It is thought the venue was chosen because of its 50-acre grounds, meaning Chelsea and her 500 guests could party away from prying eyes.

But the secretive ceremony didn’t stop well-wishers lining the streets beside the estate as they tried to catch a glimpse the bride.

Even a thin-looking Bill kept a low profile, only stopping to chat briefly on Friday night after a pre-wedding dinner party.

The ex-president and wife, US secretary of state Hillary, praised their new son-in-law.

Bill said: “I like him very much, I really do. I admire him. I feel very blessed. Hillary thinks the same way. We think he’s fabulous.”

Chelsea has been protective of her privacy since growing up in front of the cameras.

But the lavish ceremony – rumoured to have cost $3million, £1.9million – has been dubbed America’s royal wedding.

Wedding consultant Liz Sellasie said: “In America we don’t have royals, so the Clintons and the Kennedys are our equivalent. Chelsea is our Princess Diana.”

But not everyone was happy. Emn Haddad-Friedman married Alex Bero in Rhinebeck yesterday too.

But the roadblocks caused problems for her guests as they made their way to her reception.

The bride said: “I know she’s not doing it on purpose, but Chelsea Clinton has taken what was supposed to be a special day for me.”

Wedding Photographer Shot Dead

July 29th, 2010 by James Adcock

A wedding photographer in Italy was accidentally shot dead when he asked the bride and the groom to pose with guns as he wanted it “as props in the picture”.

Calogero Scimea, 45, was shot in the head when one of the guns went off.

Valentina Anitra, 22, and her sweetheart Ignazio Licodia, 25, along with their parents were horrified by the turn of events and they immediately cancelled the wedding, Daily Express reported Wednesday.

The incident took place as they were about to leave for the church in Altofonte, near Palermo, Sicily.

“No one can believe it. Everybody is in a state of shock. It’s such a tragic accident. The bride and groom are devastated,” the town’s deputy mayor, Angela Busellini, was quoted as saying.

Palermo police spokesman Colonel Teo Luzi said: “From what we have been able to establish, the photographer asked the parents of the bride and groom if they had any guns to use as props in a picture.”

“One went off, hitting him in the head, killing him. He was only there as a favour for the wedding photographer who had originally been booked but had to pull out as he was ill. The bride and groom were distraught and the wedding was immediately cancelled,” he added.
